Buying a New Laptop

Buying a laptop is a big investment, and with so many choices on the market today its not always easy to pinpoint the best value for your money. There are also things like Ebay, New Egg and others that offer you the opportunity to purchase used or refurbished laptops so be aware of those options as well.

What do you need in a laptop?

What you’re going to require in your laptop, or notebook, depends largely on what you’re going to use it for, and what the day to day things you want to accomplish with it are going to be.

If you’re a gamer, and playing World of Warcraft™ is part of your agenda, then its going to take a bit more of the optional gaming type things such as hard line graphics cards and great acceleration to make you happy with your purchase.

It’s also going to take a bit more initial outlay to make your laptop capable of playing the games you want to play.

If you, on the other hand, only want to be able to attach the odd photograph to an email and send it away, that’s going to take a lot less resources and probably a lot less power.
Some of the things you’re going to want no matter what you want to secure a new laptop for are going to be:

DVD or CD player, for viewing movies or at the least listening to music and the ability to install new software.

Sufficient  RAM, particularly if you are going to be working with any kind of graphics or playing any kind of games at all.

Built in Ethernet, to permit you to connect to a network or to the internet.

Sufficient Hard Disk Space, so that you will have room for all that you want to install. If your hard drive space is less than you need you’re going to be unhappy with the machine.

Bottom line? Don’t lay down the money until you see for sure that what you want is part of the machine.

Thanks for writing about this. There’s a heap of great tech information on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs somewhat up-to-date, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a great job with this one. How do you do it?
