Divinity is a holiday tradition in many households. Not so difficult to make, divinity should not be made on a rainy day, which is said to be an old wives tale but I’ve seen it fail so I’m lending credence to those old wives tales just for the record.

* 4 c sugar

A hot cross bun, is a type of cinnamon flavored bread that gets raisins and currants or other sweets in them. It is a yeast bread and very tasty. Typically and traditionally it was British in origination but it’s become a very traditional part of the United States Easter celebrations as well. This is an American traditional holiday treat.  Entire parties were made from a taffy making experience.  Called Taffy pulls they were an old fashioned sort of party where everyone got a sweet treat.  Taffy was an inexpensive treat at a time when white sugar and many other things were out of reach of the ordinary family.  While its definitely old style,  a taffy pull is one of the most fun things you can do at holiday time.  Bring a little bit of traditional fun back into your holidays and give the kids more than just a new toy that will lose its luster in a few months time.

As far as many people are concerned a gift that has been hand made is a wonderful gift indeed.  Giving flavored vinegars and oils is remarkably easy to accomplish and they make wonderful gifts that will be used all year long.  Add a small tag stating how you made the flavored vinegar or oil and you’ve given someone else a great new idea as well.  I make these for holiday gifts for those who are salad freaks as I am.
