Making Your Own Facials and Scrubs

agrimonyWith Christmas just around the corner, you’re going to want to look your best. Natural facials and scrubs are a great way to accomplish that, or in fact, if you mix up a few they make great all natural Christmas gifts that also have the advantage of being unique Christmas gifts.

The goal of a facial is opening pores and deep-cleaning.  Additionally facials help remove old skin cells, treat the skin to revitalizing moisture, and generally provide some much deserved pampering.

Begin with a scrub, especially if you’re having trouble with oily spots or pimples. Here’s one recipe:

2 tbs. honey

2 tbs. lime juice

2 tbs. lemon juice

½ cup oil (your choice – coconut and almond are nice)

½ cup finely powdered oats (a great scrubber)

1 tsp baking soda

Mix your ingredients together until well blended. Put this in a glass container with a good lid for use. To apply, just put some on a damp wash cloth and gently scrub your entire face in small circles (don’t forget behind the ears and the back of your neck). Rinse well with warm water then pat your face gently dry.

Note that other citrus like orange and grapefruit may be used in this recipe as an aromatic alternative to lemon and lime. All skin types usually respond well to this blend. Facials, on the other hand, are designed more specifically to the three types of skin textures (dry, normal, oily).

For dry skin, start with a foundation of ripe banana or avocado. Peel and mush eitehr with one tbs. honey and oatmeal until you reach a pasty, but easily applied consistency. Steam your face with a warm towel before applying the mask, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. An alternative to the banana or avocado is cucumber.

For normal skin, use a ripe organic peach instead, and peel it. Cook the fruit until very soft and mushy. To this foundation add one to two tbs. honey and approximately a cup of oatmeal (slowly). Stop adding oatmeal if you notice the mixture getting too dry – it needs to be spreadable. For oily skin the process is the same using strawberries, or if you’re very prone to acne, apples.

HINT: if you want a tightening affect with any one of these three, ad a well-blended egg and adjust the amount of oatmeal accordingly. Leave the facial on until it dries then rinse with cool water.
